On my stock 46 coupe, the heater motor operates both floor and defrost but only very slow. The 20 amp fuse is good. When I bypass the switch and go direct to the battery, the fan operates at a noticeably higher speed, but nothing like I'm sure is intended. Any suggestions?

the switch has 4 positions, fast and slow for heater and defrost. If it doesn't work in the fast position on either one, you probably have a defective switch or it is wired wrong.

With needle nose pliers you can carefully bend the little metal tabs on the back out just a little and remove the back of the switch. That gives you access to the brass plates and wiper knob to clean them. You must first turn the switch all the way one way or the other (can't remember which way) to pull the plastic knob off. It comes off very hard. Use electric grease to lubricate when rebuilding.The little light bulb will probably be burned out, GE makes them, 3 w in 6 or 12 volt. I take pictures to help with rebuild it unless you have a lot better memory than mine.

To take the plastic knob off, turn the switch to the high heat position, then pull.
