Topic: 1935 Top Loader Question

Trying to remove the Shift Lever Cap to housing on a 1935 Top Loader 3 speed transmission to inspect cause of slop in the gear shift lever. The forks and shift lever at the forks have minor wear but lots of rotational slop in the lever that I think is caused by wear in the pivot slot where the B-7221 pin fits under the Cap. (Referenced by the Van Pelt site http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_transID_3speed-Problems-levers.htm) The cap will not turn to remove it and it has what looks like a dimple or pin in the threaded area of the tower housing (see picture). I don’t see any reference to this in any articles I’ve read and am wondering if this is something someone did to prevent the cap from turning off. My question is should this dimple be drilled out to allow the cap to turn or are there any other techniques to remove the cap. I don’t want to damage the tower. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks,
Charlie

Problem solved. Got brave and drilled out the “dimple” which turned out to be a pin that someone put in to prevent the cap from turning. Don’t think it was like that from the factory but who knows. Once drilled out the cap turned off no problem and as suspected the lever is a poster child for the worn view on the Van Pelt site. Now need to find a replacement or someone to repair the one I have. Hope this helps someone else if they run across the same issue.

Thanks,
Charlie

That pin was not there when your car was built.
