Topic: fuel sender unit

I ran out of gas w/ a sender that showed 1/4 tank.Got a new one from Eckler. Before installing: Disconnected the hot wire from old unit and connected to the new one via jumper wire and a jumper to ground it. In full position- read 1/4 past full. I can live with that. In empty position: read 1/8 tank.Ecklers said in the catalog, "includes complete detailed instuctions on how to adjust for correct readings." How? I see no place to adjust it. I phoned Chris@ shoebox Ford and he said I need to adjust the dash unit? They were cailbrated at manufacture by Ford, and I've had 3 or 4 old Fords, (own 3 now), and never had to do that to them. Why would they have to be re-calibrated?? HELP!!!

It sounds like you need to bend the rod down slightly.

The aftermarket sending units use a variable resister to regulate the current to the dash unit and none of them are very reliable or accurate. If you have a Ford tank, try to find an original unit and install it. The same unit was used up to 1955 with different arms. You can change the arm.

Until you can get an original unit try connecting a resister in series with the sending unit wire. I would guess that a 10 ohm wire wound resister would be a good place to start. Add enough resistance so that the gauge reads empty just before the arm gets to the bottom of travel. This will give you a little reserve. I would test the reisiter at the tank, but install it at the dash unit. Insulate the resister so that it will not ground out.

"Down" would make the reading HIGHER! Think about it.

Thanks , but you got me hanging Tom. Where do I obtain a 10 ohm resistor?? All radio shacks in my area are gone.
