Topic: 1949-1955 Gas Tank Fuel Senders

Beware of the "re-pop" fuel senders the parts houses are selling!! I bought one from one of the main suppliers and before installing it I wanted to check it's accuracy.I laid it in the trunk and connected it with jumper wires to the the existing wires. When I put it in the full up position(full) it read 1/4 tank past full???!! When I put it in the full down position, it read between 1/4 and empty???!!! There is no way to physically adjust them because the unit is plastic, thus the full up and full down stops are plastic. Their ad says, "Includes complete detailed instructions on how to adjust it for correct readings." The instructions only explain Float arm lengths for different depth tanks, and I did it precisely according to their directions. I installed it, and with 3/4 of a tank, got 1/4 past full! If someone can correct me, I'm very willing to listen.I've been wrong before, so I could be again.

Regards, Steve Lee

Steve, the repop senders are variable resisters and will never be as accurate as the original type senders. The original type match current flow in the sending unit with current flow in the dash unit in order to move the needle in the dash unit. Most of the original type senders can be repaired if they are not rusted away.
