I am trying to install the light switch spider and spring on my 36 but I am having difficulty getting the U shaped retainer in place.Has anyone else had any difficulty doing this?I don't have a lift, only ramps, so I'm trying to do it on my back.
Thank you.

I can't speak for how others do it but what I do is have some one hold down the light disk to keep it from lifting. While that is being done I use a screw driver to compress the coil spring on the bottom of the column by pressing down on the switch fork. The grove for the U-shaped retainer can be seen. Slip it in the grove and slowly remove the screwdriver and you should be good to go.

On my 34 truck, I place a yardstick through the steering wheel to hold the horn rod down. From underneath on my back, I use a home made forked tool to push in and compress the spring and washer with my left hand. My right hand is then free to place the retainer clip.

Thank you Tom and MGG, I didn't think about keeping the switch on the steering wheel secure and now job is done.
Thank's again
