Most of my original ground straps look in rough shape, can I just go ahead and replace them with 1 or 2 gauge wire,or are they webbed for a reason. Tks

John, it sounds, you aren't looking for originality. I wouldn't go thru all the trouble of fabricating the ground wires as you suggest. The local auto parts store in my area has a rack of braided ground straps in several different sizes. You can probably find one in your area. But, in answer to your question, sure you can use the wire you suggest but make sure you have the correct ends and proper crimping tool. Why not just use the correct ground straps available for your car?

The ground cable carries all of the current in the system and the braiding helps to keep the cable cool. The other and more important reason for using the braided cable is flexibility. Both ground cables are very short and regular cable would be too stiff in that application. The flexing would cause strands to break and reduce the current capacity of the cable.

Never crimp a 6 volt cable, it will eventually corrode enough to give you grounding problems. They need to be soldered with electrical solder.

You can get the 2 ga cable from Brillman
