Topic: Grimy valve springs. Clean or leave alone?

Thanks for the comments on my intake manifold question. I decided to use the one with only one vacum port as it seems to be correct for a '47.

The valve spring chamber (is that what it is called?) and the valve springs are a mess. Very grimy. See pic. I'm thinking probably best to leave this area alone as if I try to clean some residue particles may work their way into the engine? I'm not doing a complete rebuild just trying to get running again after 12 yrs.

Would appreciate some experienced thoughts on this? Spruce up or leave alone?

Thanks,
Lance

It's clean in there compared to some I've seen. I'd leave it alone if I were you....

I would leave it alone also. Anything you do is going to wash that sludge into your oil pan. Like MG states, I have seen worse on great running engines.

Leave it alone, it won't hurt anything.
