I'm working on a 1939 Ford Deluxe. The question is I need to install the distribitor how do I set it to TDC? The grove in the end of the camshaft can that be 2 different ways on the distributor?
Thanks
Dennis

Dennis, if you look at the tang on the distributor, you'll see that it is not quite centered. the groove on the camshaft is also off center, so that there is only one way that the two will fit together properly. With the distributor in place, the tang will drop right into the slot without the slightest force on your part. Do not pull it up snug with the mounting bolts, as that will indicate that you have it 180ยบ off.

Dennis, as Alan said the distributor can only be installed one way. If you try to install it with the tang 180 degrees out, you will probably break the housing.

For a "newbie", I suggest that you buy 2 bolts that are longer than the distributor mounting bolts and cut off the heads. Install the bolts loosely in the top 2 holes in the timing cover. Place the distributor on the bolts and turn the rotor until you feel the tang slide into the camshaft and the housing id flush with the timing gear cover. Then install the lower bolt and remove the temporary bolts so the rest of the bolts can be installed.

Leave the upper right (passenger side) bolt out until you install the coil and condenser. This is were the condenser gets it ground.
