Topic: 52 Crestline tail light bulbs

Thank you all who reponded to my request for bringing back the lustre to my 53 Crestline. Another problem I have are the tailights. Can I put a stronger bulb in place of the standard bulb. Also any thoughts on LED"s. Thanks for your input.

I would suggest a couple of things. First remove the taillight housing and clean it up. Many times just road dust gets in there and will dull the reflection qualities. If there is corrosion of the taillight housing, you can clean and repaint with either a shiny silver or a gloss white. You will be surprised how much this improves reflection. If you are still not happy, try crinkling up some aluminum foil.
My 1949 taillights just needed to be cleaned and that improved the reflection.
I also added a LED 3rd light (Brake Lighter) from J & L Enterprises out of CT. Works great and since the whole world now only looks at the 3rd light -- solves that problem too.

I did a test a few years ago and found that white paint woorked better than silver paint, but in both cases the lights did not get much brighter. I checked the voltage to my tail lights and found that it was below 5 volts, the problem was in the lights switch. To get the brightest with incandescent bulbs, I tokk a couple of old flash light reflectors, drilled out the center to accept a bulb, and ground off the edges so that it would fit in my tail light housing. That gave me the brightest lights.

There are LED bulbs that are brighter than the regular bulbs, but you will have to find a turn signal flasher that will work with the LEDs. You can add a resister in series with the bulbs, but it will drop the voltage and make the bulbs dimmer than without the resister.

This site has the 12 Volt electronic flashers, but I could not find a 6 Volt flasher. You can contact the owner and he will reply in a short time. He also has sme LED lights that are very bright.
