What type of transmission fluid is recommended for my 1948 three speed,

nelsb01    -- 04-10-2018 @ 6:40 PM
There just was a discussion on this recently.
Do a search on Transmission.
I will help you by saying that you will be looking for 80-90 W oil -- and with a rating of GL-3 or less. Reason being is GL 4 and above does not offer protection for the brass in your transmission syncro.
If you have a Tractor Supply Store near you, they still carry Ford authorized GL-1 for Ford Tractors 1939-1952.

You can purchase SAE 90W Mineral Gear Oil API GL-1 from your local NAPA Auto Parts Store. It comes in 1 gallon containers as Part No. 65-201. If they don't have it in stock, they can order it for you.

You don't say where you are located but if its a warm area you might also think about 140 weight gear oil. Don't use the 600 weight that is advertised. That is for use in Model A Fords

  nelsb01,
GL-4 is just fine for our Ford transmissions.
GL-5 is the bad one for the yellow metals.

Where can I buy 140w gear oil? Were can I buy 600 w gear oil? Will 140w quiet rear whine a little?

JohnA    -- 04-11-2018 @ 7:02 AM
I think Macs sells 600wt,but don"t put in tranny,it"s like molasses, you have to warm it up to get it to pour.

GL 4 is fine for our old Ford transmissions.

Mac Van Pelt rebuilt my 1937 Ford 3 speed transmission and he recommended 140 wt GL4.

He is one of the premier Ford trans rebuilders in the country and his recommendation is respected by many.

Well, since I don't make my living as a transmission expert -- I listen to what others say.
I was told GL-3 or lower. I found Ford authorized GL-1 and I am using it.
Even Bob Drake's catalog says to stay away from oils that harm soft metals.
Then I also suggest that you check out your local Marine Store (as in boats) as they carry lots of GL-3.

Mac Van Pelt's phone number is?

Pennzoil Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid provides API GL-3 level performance. While specifically designed to meet GM and Chrysler specifications, it may be about the only manual transmission fluid currently available with API GL-3 rating. I intend to use it in a Non-World Class Borg-Warner T-5 manual 5-speed transmission.

Greg58    -- 04-12-2018 @ 5:59 PM
The Borg-Warner manual recommends GL1 mineral oil in overdrives, I too buy it from Napa.

Here is a link to the API gear oil specifications.

http://www.api.org/~/media/Files/Certification/Engine-Oil-Diesel/Publications/1560-Eighth-Edition-April-2013.pdf%20

Read it and make up your own mind.

Valvoline product support recommends GL-4. They do not have a 140W GL-4 oil

Edit reason (Replaced older reference with a more recent document)

Here is an email I sent to CRC Products concerning their gear oil:

Subject: Sta-Lube API GL5

Hello,

I've been using you 'Sta-Lube 85-140 API GL5 Plus' gear oil in my classic cars (1934, 1937 and 1953 Fords). I've been told that API GL5 is corrosive to the 'yellow' (brass, copper, etc.) metals used in my transmissions syncros. Is the product I'm using safe to use in these old transmissions???

Here is their response:

Good morning,

All of our gear oils are yellow metal safe. Should you have any other questions please ask. Thank you for choosing CRC products. Have a great day!

MG, if you have been using their gear oil for some time, and you have doubts about protecting the synchros, send some out to have an analysis done on it. Ask specifically if there is an excessive amount of Copper or brass in the oils. Check with company before purchasing the kit, to make sure that they will analyze your sample.

I just changed mine last fall, so I would not get good results.
