What does it mean when a flathead engine is 'ported' and 'relieved'? How is it done, and what does this accomplish? More power? Greater efficiency? Cooler running temp? I'm a novice and wondered what these terms meant. THANKS!

Porting is blending all of the intake passageways for a smooth flow of the air and fuel to the cylinder. They try and keep all of the passageways the same size so the air does not slow down and speed up. Relieving is done to the block for easier flow from the valves to the cylinder . I would look around, motor city flathead and other sites and you can pictures of both processes .

There is a reduction in compression when a block is relieved....

General consensus among those that have experience building (and racing) flathead muscle engines is that the procedures do not improve performance of street engines. If interested, there are several flathead forums where you can "search" the subject. A book published by Ol' Ron over at the Ford Barn includes the subject.
