Topic: steering column bushing

Has anyone ever replaced their upper steering column bushing?I am removing my steering wheel on my 36 standard to repair some cracks in it and thought it would be good time to replace the bushing because of some shaft play, how difficult is it to remove or should I just leave it alone?

You will get various opinions on different ways to go on bushing replacement. My favorite, that I used on my '36 Roadster, is the aftermarket bearing kit built by V-8 Club member Dan Brusegard- he often advertises in the V-8 Times. It was easy to install and well worth the cost. It made a big difference in the ease of steering.

To remove the old bushing, I scr*w*d in about three long deck screws and pried it out. Was not difficult.

I can look up Dan's contact information if you are interested.

Ken's advice is the path that I would use. I used a similar kit in my 40 back in 1976 and it has held up well and makes driving the car much easier.

I can't comment on Dan Bruseard's bearing. However, I have a modern Ford 2-part assembly( C3DZ-3517A and B1AZ-3518A), in my '35 and '36. It is a perfect fit. The change in effort is remarkable and the cost (at the time), was much less than $10. Note the picture..

X2 for Dan Brusgard's bearing. Did mine 20 yrs ago and still good. Very easy to install, you will be a happy camper. Other one looks like it rides in a nylon core. ken ct.

I can't comment on the Dan Brusegard bearing , but I have used the retrofit Ford bearing and sleeve kit with good success. I think it comes down to personal choice and how much you want to spend.

  Frank,

I've sent you a PM. If you can get your hands on the May/June 2010 V-8 Times, there is an article on page 17 about my bearing installation process.

Is there a comparable replacement setup for 41 and later?

Dan sells the bearing kit on eBay - he says it will fit 40-48 with minor modifications. Search for "Ford Steering Column Bearing Kit"
