Topic: Wiring 12 Volt Fuse Block for Accessories

Want to place 12 volt battery in trunk, place fuse block below under the dash & wire couple 12 volt accessories to fuse block. Where would positive & negative leads from the trunk battery normally be connected to this type fuse block. The two tall posts? The accessories to the fused screws on left?

This fuse block is Sierra FS 40540-1 at https://www.westmarine.com/buy/sierra--fuse-blocks--P010499432. Am open to suggestions on more suitable fuseblock & sources. Thank you.

I presume the accessories are 12 volt negative ground. So ground the negative terminal on the battery to a good ground (normally on the frame but if you are only going to run the accessories from the body, you can run the ground to the body). Then run a 10 gauge wire from the positive terminal to one of the terminals on the fuse block. Put 20 amp fuses in the fuse holders; I am assuming that your accessories consume less than 20 amps.. Run the wire to your accessories on the other side of the fuses (12 gauge). Don't worry that a 10 gauge wire is rated at 30 amps in home applications as the wire lengths can exceed 100 feet and the value is more for the voltage drop than for overheating).

There may be a better solution to powering your accessories. There are converters that change 6 Volt, positive ground into 12 Volts, negative ground. If you list the accessories that you want to use, we may be able to suggest a converter to use.
