Topic: '50 Ford V8 Timing mark

Some tell me that when the "dot " on the lower pulley is aligned w/ the pointer on the block it is @ 2 degrees advance, others say that when they are aligned that is T.D.C., or zero degrees advance. Let me hear what others think!

On the 8BA and 8RT engines, the mark on the pulley is 2 degrees before TDC. It's called initial timing. To achieve maximum performance, advance the distributer until you get pinging on acceleration. Then back off until the pinging stops.

That's what I know. I've been telling people that , and if that was TDC, then Ford would have put another mark on that pulley indicating 2 degrees; and they all tell me I don't know what I'm talking about! Of course I've only been doing this since I was 18, and I'll be 81 0n March 6th! About that ping; that's done in 3rd gear with a little load on the motor, Like accelerating from about 20 or 25 MPH and the ping should be VERY FAINT. I also knew that for years as I was a mechanic for a few dealers when I was young and that's called "Optimum Timing."I'm going to show this to them on the forum! "Puttt" Smith verified it in the phone today to one of my "1950 Ford car buddies, and he didn't know what to say! Guess he couldn't say any thing with hs "foot in his mouth!!"Thanks for putting it "In writing!!"They won't believe me!!!??
