I have a 59a block that the machine shop says need
needs to be line bored. Two shops tell me they can
bore it but the caps are a problem. They say about
.020" needs to be ground off of the cap. this makes

  Is the problem that the original caps were lost? Your post was incomplete. The main bearings in your 59AB are inserts, and the only need for line boring the block is if the main caps don't match the block. We line bore in our shop when caps are replaced, usually because someone tried to resize the caps by filing the bases, making the out of round. Occasionally we will find that the block is warped, placing one or more mains out of line. More often than not, line honing is the fix, rather than boring. Main bearing inserts come in standard, .010, .020, and .030 oversize, and the crankshaft is ground to match.
