Here is a link to one that is available used on EBay.

It is fairly large though.

Here is the website for Westach:
http://www.westach.com/products/6%20VOLT%20GAUGES/index.php

I was able to use one of their 2" diameter tachs in my '53 Ford by mounting the tach in the instrument panel where the clock was originally located.

I have a 6V tachometer on order now from Westach. Apparently they don't have them just sitting on a shelf waiting to ship. They said 6-8 weeks for delivery, and the 8th week is quickly approaching.

I have an electric tach on my '35 and '36 (6 volt). It is simple to install (just wrap a wire around a spark plug wire) and accurate. The best part it only costs $10 (eBay) and comes with a enclosed battery. They have been in use for three years with no problems.

flatheadfan - How accurate is that Tach? Have you compared to known accurate Tachs?....

ibshane    -- 02-20-2018 @ 11:56 PM
I was wondering about that too.
Reviews on these seem to be pretty mixed!

flatheadfan    -- 02-21-2018 @ 5:00 AM
I have switched the tachs between my '35 and '36 to check their accuracy and the readings were consistent. As far as testing it with another tach, I haven't. A couple other guys I know who have them and seem happy with them.

If you are looking for a tach for a Pre-'49 you are almost restricted to a crank type of tach which requires a significant amount of room between the distributor and the radiator. See picture

I prefer the analog style over the digital style. My car had a digital tach when I purchased it. The tach was very difficult to read and the readings bounced all over so I was never really sure of the actual engine speed. I replaced the digital unit with the analog Westach that has been in the car for over a year now and it continues to work well. It is true that they are expensive and you have to wait awhile to get one but they are well worth it.

I'm still waiting for my 6V Westach that was ordered for me in mid December as a Christmas present. This is definitely the tach I want, so I have no choice but to wait

Don't worry, they probably had a backlog of orders to fill for Christmas. It took quite awhile for mine to arrive, too.

ibshane    -- 02-22-2018 @ 10:50 AM
  Does Westach offer a digital?

JM    -- 02-23-2018 @ 9:07 PM
  Check out their website: http://www.westach.com/

Nope..., no digital that I could find on their site.

You would think their site would have the ability to indicate whether or not an item is in stock!

TomO    -- 02-25-2018 @ 7:45 AM
Digital tachs are harder to read because the engine speed can vary and the tach numbers will be moving fast to track the speed. If the numbers don't move, the tach is using an averaging circuit to display the numbers.

My Westach (2CT54-6V, pos or neg grd, 0-5000 rpm, 2" dia.) tachometer arrived yesterday. Can't wait to install this in my 35 fordor to check engine rpms at various speeds in different gears.

  John=

Could you post a picture of the wiring instructions or diagram?

Thanks

Tom

JM    -- 03-02-2018 @ 8:45 PM
Here you go Tom. I took this pic earlier today to post on another forum discussion where someone else was curious about how this connected. I hope this is readable.

  John-

Thanks for the picture. Looking at the diagram gives the impression that this tach won't work with a '32-'48 distributor. Are there any modifications that must be made to your '35 distributor internally to facilitate the hook-up?

Thanks

Tom

ibshane    -- 03-03-2018 @ 1:04 AM
  Nice!

TomO    -- 03-03-2018 @ 8:15 AM
You can use the tach on the 32-41 distributors by connecting the wire that is shown going to the distributor side of the coil to the mounting tab for the condenser. The 42-48 distributors would use the wiring diagram as it is shown.

I don't know why they would show the ignition switch between the coil and distributor.
