Topic: '37 221 V8 Timimg?

My vacuum gauge tells me I have "Late Ignition Timing" on my '37 221 V8.
Before I make my 1st attempt at adjusting my "Divers Helmet" style distributor, is there any tricks I need to know or precautions I need to be aware of before "diving" in???

I doubt that changing the timing will change your vacuum reading enough to get it into the "Green" area of the vacuum gauge.

As I said in my answer to your other post, I believe that your idle is set too high, so that the throttle plates are open reducing the vacuum. The idle should be set to 450 RPM. This will have the throttle plates closed enough so that the combustion air is coming from the idle circuit and can be regulated by the idle mixture adjustment screws and the fuel is coming from the idle ports below the throttle plates.

The timing on your distributor is determined by the break set of points opening. If your distributor was set correctly when the points were installed and the point rubbing blocks are not worn, the timing is correct for the best starting and fuel economy.

Vacuum readings are affected by atmosphere pressure, throttle openings, engine condition and efficiency and finally by the idle mixture screws. Timing can make a difference by affecting engine efficiency. If your car starts fine, has good throttle response and delivers around 15 MPG in driving around town, your timing is probably correct.

  Ok Thanks!
That does make sense. For some reason I didn't catch that on the other post??
Yeah.., it runs & drives really well as is.
