How big of a job is it to pull the motor from 1940 ford deluxe
With a flathead v8. I have started but I'm not sure what to unbolt at the transmission end inot the drive shaft. I have never pulled a motor before

Steve, I remove the hood for clearance and the front seat to prevent grease stains as well as give more room to work on the engine.

Disconnect the battery
Remove the floor mat and the floor boards
Remove the fan
Remove the radiator hoses and the radiator
Remove the chatter bars from the engine to the frame
Disconnect the exhaust pipes
Disconnect wires from the coil and generator
Remove the generator
Remove the motor mount bolts
Connect the engine hoist chain to exhaust manifold bolts at the front and back of the engine on both sides.
Remove the bolts from the bell housing
Support the transmission with a jack
Raise the engine with the hoist and adjust the jack under the transmission
Pull the engine forward and then remove it.

If I have left out any steps, you will find out when you start the job or someone will be kind enough to add them. Good Luck.

Before removing the hood be sure to use a grease pencil or other device to mark the locations of the bolts on the hood. This will make it easier to line up the hood when you put it back on the car.

Remove the bolts from the transmission mount or at the very least, loosen them up quite a bit. If not, you'll run a high risk of breaking the mount "ears".

Thanks tom, alot of good information I hand no idea about the floor boards. Should I drain the transmission? So it's best to leave the trans in. I am having the motor rebuit.

You can get at the bellhousing 9/16 bolts with a swivel and long extension
cause I hate fooling with floor mats. After front motor mounts are
removed : now you jack or block the transmission Then comes the
misrable exhaust pipes. I just find it easier to unblolt exhaust manifolds
and just leave it there pipes & all> Things I hate > draining antifreeze taking the hood off, taking lower misrable hoses off . other than that
20 minutes then its on the floor... Anti freeze happens every time, to
slide the drain pan then I step in it 5 gal all over me and floor. (smile)
Other than that, all clutch linkage shift rods stay . Then when lifting
engine out expect to wear 1/2 of coolant from the water pumps all over
good Idea is to use rubber caps on the pumps hardware store...
to clairify forgot to say "blocking the trans" I meant to say that
you already have a chain fall holding engine UP remove front mounts now jack or bleck trans. right there. Then I would buy
one of those leveling things for the chain fall thats slick..

How do you remove the chatter bars on flathead V8. I removed the nuts but how do they come off the frame? No bolt thru the frame.
