Topic: shock kit

I have a '37 ford slant back, original. A friend has a shock kit that says it was made for a '42-48 ford. Would anybody know if it would fit my '37 or would it be way to different and require a lot of work. I know these kits can be a bit pricey. I was mostly a chevy guy before I got this '37 so it is a learning experiance Thanks

Pretty sure I replied to this same question a while back?

I recently got shock kits for my '37 Fordor & the "Fits List" for the kits is as follows:

Front kit fits 1935-40
Rear kit fits 1932-48

From this I would deduce that the rear kit for a '42 would fit the rear of a '37
But it looks like a negatory on the front kit?

I was trying to find out how difficult it would be to use on the 37. I was hopeing it may be a simple alteration?? I've never did one. Maybe someone out there with more experience with both years could advise me on using a 42-48 kit and installing it on a 37. The price he'll sell the 42 kit is really a good price compaired to new. Mabey it wint even work for the 37 that is what I'm trying to find out. Thanks anyway

Greetings Onedon, The biggest problem, though maybe not the only one, is the mounting holes for the bracket replacing the houdaille shock . They are different. Not much , but enough. I am not at home right now, so can,t measure them for you. I'm sure someone else will fill in some of the blanks, so keep in touch. I think I might have a pair of '37 brackets . What all comes with the '42 kit? Tube shocks are good, but probably comparable to a good set of the originals. Good luck. 42oink.

Thanks for the info. the kit I can get is complete (never used) I just wasn't sure about the brackets. I'm not familure with the changes between the years

I know the 40 and maybe 41 are different than 42-48. I have an earlier pair for the front out in the garage. If you can measure the bolt hole distance, I will check the set I have to see if it's a fit.

If the kit is made for the 42-48 Ford the upper brackets will not fit the 37. All the other parts may fit. The bolt spacing on the brackets is different and will not matchup to the holes in the 37 frame where the stock shocks bolt. Depending on who made the kit, there may not be room enough to redrill the holes. Do you know if the kit is an early aftermarket kit or a late style street rod kit? On some kits the lower part of the shock mounts on a wishbone pin and others the lower part of the shock mounts on the upper part of the spring shackle. In addition there are some kits that the lower mount is a stud that passes through the axle.

Onedon, I purchased a 35 coupe several years ago that has been converted to modern tubular shocks using a commercially made conversion kit. The front mounts on my car look nothing like the ones shown in your picture. I seriously doubt those would work on a 37 Ford.
