There are lots of v8 adjustable lifters out there. Can someone tell me how to identify the good ones and which ones are junk?

One way is to see the the price. Good quality lifters will be at or above $200/set. We buy ours at C&G as 91A-6500-ADJ. If you buy the also get the special wrenches 91A-6500-WRN.

Red's Headers sells the hollow adjustable lifters. Most of the pothers are solid and heavier. If you are going to install adjustable lifters, have the machine shop drill holes in the lifter bosses so you can use a small drift punch to keep the lifter from turning while adjusting it. The wrenches that you get with the lifters were designed to expand your vocabulary in ways that your neighbors would not approve of. I don't remember the size of the hole, just that it was near the top of the boss and you could fit a small drift punch in it. Red's may be able to give you the information. Tom

Actually, the hole should be at the bottom of the boss. A 5/32" hole works well using an 1/8" punch or allen wrench. A larger hole won't hurt anything.

You should also considered buying some long shank tappet wrenches such as Craftman tappet wrenches. Typical Ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Set-of-5-Craftsman-V-Tappet-Wrenches-3-8-7-8/332523043166?hash=item4d6beaf95e:g:YRMAAOSwhplaXpvo If you use regular wrenches you will make a relativity easy job into a "knuckle nightmare." I have the wrenches and can drill the lifter holes. Now, I assume some of the hollow so called Johnson style lifters are good and some are not. What about the slotted types? same thing? I also assume I am safe getting them from Red's or C and G? Thanks everyone.

When you get the new tappets, check that they are all good and that the threads will lock the adjustment in place. There have been reports that some of them have been shipped with threads that are loose. Tom
