What do I look for in a generator if I want a true 1933 generator?

Look for one with the front and rear ends exactly like those shown on the right side of the photo below. Also, it should have a threaded stud for the output connection to the cutout, not a wire connection. In other words, no wires protruding from the center section.

If there is a tag or plate on the generator it should show the number 40-10000-B or A. It would be quite unusual to find one after all these years. Most cars from the 30's and 40's had replacements installed at some time. They were replaced by 46-10000-B which is 18 amp output. The original was 12. The same style generator was used from 33 thru 35.

It would appear that Fred is seeking originality so, with respect, while Ccaz's generator is an original, the cutout attached to it is not.

is the cutout not original because it has no ford script or because of it's hookup.

The cut out should have just the Ford script on the top. It should have the open end slotted holes for mounting as yours does. The output wire attaches with a hex head screw and insulator to the opposite side of the cut out from the input side. There are no additional ground wires from the cut out to the generator body as yours has. The V8 Club 33-34 restoration book is a very valuable source of reference.

In addition, the connection between the threaded output post on an original cut out was a separate L-shaped bracket attached to the back of the cutout with a square insulator and a binding head screw. Your connection appears to be an integral part of the cut out.
