what procedure is used to replace the brushes in my 48 flathead starter motor, getting them out is easy, replacing them is not so easy.

The most difficult part of putting brushes in a starter is holding them back against the springs to allow the armature shaft to enter the end plate. A couple of home made wire hooks can be used to pull the brushes back far enough to allow the back plate to move into place before the brushes are released. It is important that the commutator be cleaned using a fine grade abrasive strip. If the segments of the commutator are badly worn, the mica separators should be cut back so the brushes make full contact with the segments. We used a machine for that job, but an old hacksaw blade ground to the proper width will work if carefully done.

I pull the springs back enough to allow them to rest on the side of the brush. Then assemble the starter motor and reach into the slot at the front of the motor and push the brush towards the commutator. The brush will seat on the commutator and the spring will be putting pressure on the back of the brush. Install the brush cover.

I have a photo on my computer, but cannot find it at this time.
