Topic: 42 Fordor front axle bent?

Mtpockets335    -- 01-14-2018 @ 3:55 AM
  Greetings All

I am restoring a 1942 Fordor, and I have a query for all the front end specialists out there.

I have pulled the front axle off the car, and have noticed that the beam axle appears bent/bowed rearwards. ( check photo )

I really don't think Henry built them this way - I suspect the beam has taken a few hits in days gone by. However, as this is my first early Ford resto, what do I know!

Many thanks.
MT

My first suggestion is to try to locate a NOS axle. Your axle can be straightened by a front end shop that does truck work. It is not just taking the bend from the mid section of you axle, but the king pin bosses should also be checked for caster and camber. That axle took a pretty good hit sometime in it's life.

  Thanks Woodie 46
Truck repair shop is a good suggestion, trucks still use beam front ends with King pins, so those fellas should have the gear.

In the meantime, I will start the search for another axle - that will be a nice sized lump for shipping to Blighty!

The same front axle was used on Fords and Mercurys from 1942 -1948, so you may be able to find a good used one in the UK or on the continent before Brexit. Check with other members of the Club in the UK.

There is one on E-Bay at this time.

Your biggest challenge will be getting the pins out of the wishbone.

TrjFord8 - any tips for getting these pins out?

I've tried some initial persuasion with a big hammer, but they are solid!
Would heat and a hydraulic press be the best bet?
