How come When I replaced a cracked cylinder head ( 24 stud "A" Head) on my "59" stamped engine it worked with no problem? According to Ken Brown's 41- 48 Ford book 41-42 heads won't work on 42-48 blocks without modification to avoid valve interference. The only thing I can think of is perhaps the head was already modified, I was lucky in my ignorance.

Get the engine RPM up high enough and your going to have problems. KRW made a tool for modifying the early head, it removes a small amount of material from the area around the top of the valve. The modification was not done all that much so I would assume the head on your engine has not been modified.

How does one know if this modification has been done or not?

you will need a true 40 head gasket and a 59ab gasket to compare. I have done several heads with KRW tool, not hard to do but opens up the head for the different valve angle in A verses 59ab engines
