Topic: 1947 Ford Closed Car Underlayment

Most likely overlooking it, but can't find in "The 41-48 Ford Book".
What was used under the front floor mat as insulation/underlayment, also, what was used under the trunk floor mat?
As usual, any and all information is appreciated.

Bill - pm OCHICKOK (new owner of my 'miss it badly now' '47 and also new EFV8 member) and ask him to take some pics of the underside of each. Keep in mind the front floormat is different (Merc vs. Ford) but the under-layment should be the same, and the trunk mat should be an identical match all around.

Just sent you an e-mail with a pic of the lubrication page from the SHOP MANUAL we discussed a couple of days back - let me know if that works for you.

Bill, the floor mats in my '46 are black rubber with an underlayment that looks like carpet underlayment used on house carpet. It is bonded somehow to the rubber mat. It's not original but purchased from ether Bob Drake or Dennis Carpenter, I can't remember which. That material contributed to the floors rotting out because it absorbed and held moisture from wet feet.

Repro rubber mats generally use a backing composed of recycled shredded rag material. Original backing was composed of ground hemp-like or organic plant fibers ..... which are/were fairly combustible as I discovered when the rusted-out holes in my floor pans allowed the exhaust pipe to start the backing on-fire.
