I just purchased some aftermarket lug bolts for the rear drums. They are loose in the drums. Someone suggested that I put the nuts on and tighten them down, then tack weld. Would this be recommended? I've checked with 3 different suppliers and they all seem to be the same size.

The studs for the drums should have a shoulder on the so that they can be swedged in place. Welding them will hold them in place, but the shoulder may keep the wheel from fully seating on the drum. Here is the page from the Green book that shows the correct size for the 35 car. You may be able to find the correct bolt at an auto supply store. They may have to special order from Dorman or other bolt suppliers. Tom

Thanks for the drum & stud info. I believe that my stud should be type 1 which is not knurled in the picture. Is that correct? Shouldn't they be knurled? The diameter seems correct. Thanks again............................................. This message was edited by t35 on 11-30-17 @ 8:44 AM

They should not be knurled. The need to be swedged in place. Mac's sells a tool for this, you need to take it to a machine shop that has a hydraulic press and can swedge them on for you. https://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_mercury_early/hub-bolt-installation-tool-used-for-swedging.html Under More Information click on Inst5ructions to see the instructions for using the tool. When we replace wheel studs we always tack weld them. The knurling is not reliable in old drums. If the stud turns when trying to dismount the wheel, it is a tough situation, particularly on the rear hubs.
