  hi
I would think these are drag cars and have high horsepower engine,
they used to run them in the DRAG STRIPS in GAS COUPE CLASS, and such,
sort of the FUNNY CAR of today,
not really a STREET DRIVEABLE CAR,not something you would take on a trip,
just my 3 cents worth,37RAGTOPMAN
some time the body's are so worn out and cut up,and missing to many parts to restore it back to original and not worth the time, the only use for them is a drag car or stock car, old time stock car, in the 40's 50's 60's

Well not being a drag racer but a reader of Hot Rod Magazine as a teen I will take a stab. It was or still is a class in NHRA dragracing a modified car usually a coupe like Stone Woods and Cook (I think) 40-41 Willys coupe, made lightweight with fiberglass hood fenders for all out racing but used regular pump gas or racing gas not nitro or methane or whatever, think engine could be blown. Ebayers just use it as a catch line, like ratrod or hotrod. But I think mainly the term "Gasser" comes from fuel used in such an all out race car.

The original use of the term was to distinguish between cars that used just gasoline, and those using alcohol, aviation gas, or other "exotic fuels", mostly dragsters. As time has passed, many of these early definitions have been expanded, misused, or otherwise misapplied. When I was a short track racer, we dabbled in fuels, but never saw much advantage over "hi test" pump gas for that purpose. Now, we are seeing street racers equipped with nitro systems!
