Topic: Oil in the older non rebuilt Engine

Good morning, I am getting an older 59AB running, what is the best oil to use in it when changing the old oil. Was told to use non detergent 30W. I bought 5 qts. and read the lable "Do not use in gasoline engines" I don't think I should use HD type, because of the age of the motor?? What is best?? Thanks, Dale T.

Use a name brand straight 30 weight detergent oil like Pennzoil. Since the newer oils no longer have the required amounts of zinc and phosphorous to minimize cam lobe and valve lifter wear, use an additive with the oil such as Red Line Engine Oil Break-In Additive.

Use any major brand oil. You can use the 30W or 10W30 or 20W40 oil in your engine. You can search this forum for oil and read some interesting comments. Here is a recent discussion.

Thank you for the reply, my other question is, do you think the detergent oil will break down the "sludge" in this old engine and cause other problems ?? Thanks, Dale

IMHO, no. The current sludge is probably firmly adhered to the casting and oil pan bottom. You may reduce the sludge over many years, but it is more likely that you will add some by short trips. I strongly recommend a detergent oil in your engine.

Do a Google search on detergent oil in antique cars and you will see many opinions both ways, so you can make up your own mind.

If you are using the older type of partial flow oil filter that originally came on your engine, any sludge that would be set free by the detergent oil would eventually be captured in the filter cartridge.

  Thank You I agree...

I agree with TomO .... 10w30 and detergent. IMHO changing oil every 1000 miles is of more importance as compared to filter systems. Have 59AB rebuilt 35,000 miles ago, use 10w30, no filter, and still have 70 lbs oil pressure at cold idle rpm..
