Topic: 1936 Radiator Cap

calwestra    -- 04-21-2010 @ 7:37 PM
Almost finished with the restoration of my 1936 Ford Phaeton. But when I went back to the last cardboard box to find the radiator cap, IT"S GONE. I've looked and looked and yep, it's gone. Quick call NAPA and they were even confused. What's with Ford and what were they thinking making the 1936 Ford radiator cap exclusively for the year of 1936 only????
Does anyone know where to find a 1936 cap or is it easier to weld a 37 neck on my radiator? What a discusting day!!!

The Green Book shows that the 35 and 36 radiator caps are the same. Joblot Automotive parts in NY says to call them to check stock.

If they don't have it post an ad in Parts wanted and check E-Bay for used caps.

There is an aftermarket radiator cap on E-Bay at this time. Item # 330426177483

I don't believe that the '35 or '36 radiator caps are being reproduced, except for pickups, which are different. Your best bet is eBay or Hemmings, but be prepared for "sticker shock".

There was a great after market replacement cap for 35/36 passenger cars made by Everseal company. It was their R-1 model and had everything but the wire bale. Try using one of these until you can find the genuine cap.

Don, your text indicates R-1 cap, but your picture shows R-2 which I also have, but the R-2 will not fit the 36 Ford. I bought it for the gasket, until I found and original cap and also bought the reproduction kit for the seal kit. I do not doubt the R-1 would fit.

Thanks.

Gary, I didn't think the R-2 would show in the photo. The R-1 is correct for 35/36 Ford and the top side is identical with the R-2

Sticker Shop, yea but it's new old stock. Found it in Ohio. I checked the book and the bale is correct so I'm sending a check today. One of those "just got to do it" things you tell the wife.
Thanks all.

Cal, Please keep in mind that early 36 Ford radiator caps had a cadmium plated rivet and that rivet was changed to brass in the April/May 1936 time frame.
