Can anybody tell me what this strap/handle thing on the back of the front seat in this 1937 Fordor is called...., and where I might possibly locate one??

Coat hanger, garment hanger, etc. What it is NOT is a passenger strap or handle. I always warn anyone getting in the back seat to NOT use it as a handle and explain not only how fragile it can be but also what it is intended for. Never sourced one - perhaps LeBarron Bonney. Steve

I think I heard somewhere that they were originally used to hang a small blanket on to use as a foot warmer?

Its usually called a robe rail. The metal ends and chains are extremely hard to find and the mounts. ken ct

Back in the day when heaters were an optional accessory a small heavy blanket or robe was standard equipment in the colder parts of the country. I found one in the rumble seat of my original model A when I purchased it. Even with a heater under the dashboard it would have been normal to hang a robe over the robe rail to keep your backseat passengers happy since the heat from the front was probably less than optimum in the rear seat.

It is called a robe rail. You will have to hunt for an original and they are hard (not impossible) to find in good condition. It is my understanding that the robe rail is used to hang the robe when the robe is NOT in use. Vintage photos I have seen of backseat passengers in pre war cars show the robe - when in use - being draped over the legs of the passengers and not draped on the robe rail. You could not use the robe rail in my family's 1941 Buick Series 90 Sedan in that fashion; the robe rail is really far from the rear seat. . . . 78-730B This message was edited by TonyM on 11-8-17 @ 9:33 AM

From what I can tell, LB only has the robe rail cord for a 37, no brackets. I am looking for the brackets if anybody knows where to get them, originals are preferred. Thanks, gregg

I have an unrestored '37 Deluxe Fordor touring sedan. It had about 59k miles on it when I bought it. The original upholstery shows no sign of it ever having a robe rail.

Robert, on page 3-4 of the V-8 Club's '37 book it says only the Deluxe Fordors and the Convertible Sedans had robe rails. Why yours shows no evidence of a robe rail is a mystery. It's possible at some point that your front seat may have been reupholstered due to damage and they failed the reinstall the robe rail, or it was never installed at the factory.
