Topic: Question: Brake Master Cylinder Fluid - Bleeding

Fhower    -- 10-27-2017 @ 3:43 PM
Ok,I may be worrying about nothing and then again maybe not. I am working on a 41 Super Deluxe and trying to bleed the brakes. We were using the two-man method and noticed that when pressing down on the brake pedal, with the bleeder valve closed, a small fountain for brake fluid arose from the master cylinder filler opening. Is this right? Ot do I have an issue in the master brake cylinder? Thanks!

No that is normal. It is just a little fluid squirting back out of the hole in the bottom of the master cylinder before the piston goes by it.

I've bled cars, trucks and motorcycles and when testing the brakes you did it easily or there would be brake fluid everywhere unless the cap was on the master cylinder, so--yes it will "fountain" a bit. Speaking from experience only--others on this forum may well have valid reasons for being concerned.
Looks like Matt can type faster.

The fountain appears not while pressing down on the pedal but while releasing the pedal after it has been depressed. The pressurized brake fluid is returning to the master cylinder.

It’s called a compensation port to make sure fluid not air gets into the bore
