I have a 1940 ford V8 85 that misses badly on acceleration. It has a brand new carb, professional rebuilt distributer (machine calibrated) , rebuilt engine, new condenser. New spark plug wires and plugs. Starts fine when choked. It does not quit running just misses. Any ideas? should say MISSING NOT MIDDING This message was edited by turnertexas on 10-26-17 @ 7:09 AM

Your problem could be ignition (spark plug fouled, spark plug gap, crossed wires, wires not seated in inner caps, inner caps not seated, inner caps corroded, inner caps worn, rotor worn, points pitted or gapped wrong ), fuel(dirt in carburetor, bad fuel, too little fuel or too much fuel) or compression (rings or valves not seated, head gasket). Start by determining which cylinder or cylinders are missing by shorting out one spark plug at a time when the miss is occurring. The plug(s) that do not slow down the engine the same amount as most of them, need further diagnosis. Pull the plugs on these cylinder and examine the plug(s). Clean, replace or adjust the plug as necessary and then repeat the test. Use a vacuum gauge to help with the diagnosis.
