Topic: Canadian paint codes

Yokomo99    -- 10-18-2017 @ 3:13 PM
I am new here and I just picked up a 1953 Ford Customline. I am trying to figure out what the original paint colour was but the two vin plates don't look anything like the US models. Would anyone be able to help I have been looking on/line but I am just getting more confused.

  Happy to help, amigo.

Look for stamped rectangular metal plates on the firewall. One of them should have a number beside PAINT.

Let me know what it is, and I'll look it up in a Ford of Canada book.

The tag on the firewall in the engine bay has the number 74 beside the paint tag

The code CBF-70-B identifies your car as a Ford of Canada Customline Tudor.

Serial number 0470H53xxxxx translates as:

04 Ford Custom

70 Tudor

H L.H.D. Home Office

53 Model Year

xxxxxxx Consecutive job number at assembly plant

The paint code 74 is curious for a '53. My September 1954 Ford of Canada '49 to '54 catalogue (566 pages) shows 74 as a 1952-only number, used for both Raven Black and Vassar Yellow.

It may be that the vehicle had a special order paint job when new.

the color on the firewall looks like Cascade Green. This may have been a Spring Color.

  Thanks Grant
My sons and I just brought this car back from Alberta a couple of weeks ago. My sons want to fix this up as my car to drive after I retire in a couple of years.
I was looking around on the net for info and I think it may have been painted to match a Ford ad. My car has a dark blue roof and here is one ad from 1953 I saw on Pinterest that has a dark blue roof and a medium green body just like my little beastie. Being 65 years old my car has been around a long time and previous owners have had lots of time to do God knows what to it before I ever laid eyes on her so who knows. The lower paint matches the firewall so it is probably correct (maybe?). This car will be a driver so I will paint just like the factory did, just with modern material.

I think you are right Tom. My roof though is dark blue.
I think it looks like this one:

I added a pick of my car below.

  Matt,

Now that I see a photo of the car, I think that you have one of the two-tone combinations offered in 1953, with the lower body painted Cascade Green and the top painted Sheridan Blue.

The V-8 Club's 1952-1953 Book has a lot of information about your car and would be a good investment if you intend to restore the car and show it at V-8 Club meets.

  Thanks Tom
That will work out fine as, the more I look at it, I've decided I really like that combination. I had already planned on picking up the book.

I am just making a video about cleaning the carb today. It was full of cobwebs and had a 1/4" of orange dust in the bottom of the float bowl. Looking at it I can't believe the car ran so well. No wonder it wouldn't idle without the choke.
If you would like to see a video of the guy I bought the car from getting the 53 running watch this video from "Coldwarmotors"

Scott has an interesting bunch of videos on his site. He is a real nice guy even if he likes old Chryslers. Also be sure to watch the repair on the 1931 Ford truck bed. The cab repair is fantastic as well.

Matt, that "orange dust" may be rust flakes form you gas tank. Check the sediment bowl on the fuel pump and remove the sending unit from the tank to inspect its condition. There is an access panel in the floor of the trunk that allows you to remove the sending unit.

I would soak the screws holding the sending unit in place with a good penetrating solution before trying to remove the unit. The screws can break and then you will have to drill them out.

I was running the car on a gravity tank I use for testing but you are right the bowl on the fuel pump is also partially full of the same red dust so the tank looks suspect. When I bought the car I figured I would have to replace the tank anyway as I am very pessimistic about fuel systems. I have already picked up new fuel and brake lines to completely replace them front to back.
