Topic: coil voltage 40 Ford

I have friend who has inherited his great grandfathers 40 pickup (in the family since new and a great Rouge truck in all respects when he got it). He now has converted to 12 volts negative ground and the original 6 volt coil runs with over 5 volts. Does this mean it is going to have an early coil failure? If so, how does he get the coil voltage down to its design value?
Does Skip Hanney rebuild original coils in a 12 volt version? I had him rebuild mine (6v) and it has been great.

The maximum voltage for original type Ford coils is 3.5 volts with the points closed. Anything beyond that will result in deterioration of the coil, condenser, and points. Skip can rewind your coil for 12 volt application, or you can reduce the input voltage by placing a resistor in series with the original resistor on the firewall. Coils are wound to a specific "impedance", a combination of simple resistance to the length of the windings, and "reactance" which, simply put, is resistance to current flow due to both magnetic reluctance and capacity.
