Hello all. I am a new member, having just bought a 34. Would anyone be so kind as to advise me what engine oil, transmission lube, and anti-freeze is best to use?-Dave

While the Early Ford club here is a good place for a new antique car owner and has the best club magazine of any hobby center you should join the Ford Barn, the info there is endless and member are so helpful, go to https://www.fordbarn.com

I would also recommend purchasing the 1934 Book offered by the V-8 Club, loads of information.

Any major brand of oil will work very well in your car. The best weight would probably be 20W-40. For the transmission use SAE 80W-90 API Services: GL-5 and for the rear end use the 80-140 GL-5.

I'd use Valvoline 20/50 Racing oil for your motor, because it has the Zinc in it that your flat tappet camshaft needs. None of the others have it, and without the zinc you'll ruin your cam in a hurry! With the others you'd have to add the zinc separately every time you do an oil change. It's given me very good results

TomO, is that a misprint when you recommended GL-5 for the transmission?

Wonder same thing about TomO's post.

Otherwise, my '47 59AB rebuild has about 34,000 on it and I use conventional Penn 10w-30 year round for my northerly climate ..... no filter .... change at 1,000 miles .... still has very good oil pressure. Use 90 StaLube GL4 in tranny for better shifting, and 140 in banjo.

Thanks guys for catching the typo. GL-4 is the spec for the transmission.

Depending upon how cold it gets where you live will dictate how much anti-freeze to use. If you live where the temperature drops below freezing, I would recommend using Prestone concentrare anti-freeze in a 50/50 mixture with distilled water.
