Topic: 1936 ford distributor timing

I have had to replace the front bushing and points on my 36 distributor. Not having a fixture to time it, I have to rely on an old repair manual. The diagram shows adjustment for vacuum brake distributors to 1948 and shows a picture of the later single cap two bolt style. Do I still use the same measurements off the cam drive tang? Also are the left hand points the ones from facing the back of the distributor? THANK YOU!

I believe that adjustment method is the same for both types of distributors, but I would just adjust both points at .016 and set the adjustment on the right side in the middle of the scale. Put a tiny dab of grease on each rubbing and on the cotter pins of each set of points. Check breaker point tension, if possible, should be 20-22oz. This is about the best you can do without special equipment and it should run ok. According to Ford service manual, pg 69, may 1,1941, left and right points are as viewed from drivers seat.

I don't recommend this procedure, but it will get your Ford running.
