Have a newly rebuilt 8BA flathead in 50 Ford. It smokes out the tailpipe
mostly in first and second gear. Engine runs strong and does'nt seem to be using oil. Engine has been bored .060 over with Merc crank ect. Runs cool. Now has about 1000 miles on rebuilt engine. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jerry

What color is the smoke? Black: too rich a mixture. Blue: oil/bad valve seals on one or more intakes, rings not yet seated. White: water. Gray: aluminum/ very bad news. How much smoke? A steady cloud or just a puff when shifting?
Not knowing the extent of the " rebuild" we are just guessing. Were the cylinders honed properly? What type of rings were used, Chrome or iron. New valve guides?
You can check the condition of the rings and valve seals using a compression gage and/or a vacuum gage. You may just need a few more miles to seat the rings, or it could indicate potential problems.
Post back with a bit more information and we'll see if we can help.
