Topic: removing rust inside a flathead

  Hello,
I know there has been lots of discussion about rust removal over the years. Hopefully my question is simple with a simple answer.

I am replacing both water pumps in my 37 Fordor 85hp. There appears to be lots of cr*p and rust in the block when I look in the radiator hose connections on top and where the water pumps were.

At a minimum I will stick a garden hose in the top and see what can be flushed out. Beyond this, should I fill it with vinegar/water solution? or try some evapo-rust, or ?? and let it sit for a couple days?

Thanks for any/all advice.

  Try this stuff > http://www.rust911.com/rust911-rust-remover-16x-ultra-concentrate-16-oz-makes-2-gal/

It's a concentrate and much cheaper than Evapo Rust. I used it in my '34 and it really did the job....

  MG,
Thanks for the link. I like what I read, plus free shipping is always good.
I will order some and give it a try.

When you remove water pumps, use a stiff wire, such as from a coat hanger, to poke around in the exposed water jacket to loosen deposits, then flush the block with a hose in the outlets in the heads. You will likely get rust, core sand, and other stuff. Adding a bottle of rust preventative, sometimes called "water pump lube" to the radiator is a good practice, too.

Great to know, now on my list to do today.

On a related note, when installing the new pumps, should I apply gasket sealer (e.g. perma-tex) to both sides of the gasket?

Thanks,
gregg

Yes, install Permatex #2 (non-hardening sealer) to both sides of the waterpump gaskets before installing them.
