I was at a salvage yard last week and spotted a rear end from a Ford with the Spyder (I think that they were called that) type rear/ drums with that wide bolt pattern. Used from '36 to '39 models I believe. My question is, what type of puller is used to remove these drums from the tapered axle shafts? I have a puller that works on Plymouth's and Dodges with a much smaller bolt pattern but I cannot see it spreading out far enough to handle the Spyder type. Thank you for any info here. John

The pullers you need are the same as used on the other early Ford rear brake drums. They attach to the slot in the center of the hub and push against the axle shaft (with the nut loosened) . There are several types.

Juergen is correct, the puller in your picture will destroy your hub if it had been installed correctly. The hub you describe as a Spyder is called a Wide 5 hub. A Spyder hubcap is an accessory hubcap for a wide 5 wheel. Alan

I loaned my KRW puller to a friend, and he called to say that the hub wouldn't release even when the screw was very tight, and smacking the puller with a hammer didn't help. I asked him if he had removed the flat washer under the hub nut before attaching the puller. He called back to say he found the washer in place, and when removed, the hub came off with ease. Fortunately, both the puller and the axle survived!

Don't forget to turn the shoes all the way in...they can catch on the drum otherwise
