Needle on gas gauge on my stock 46 buried past full when driving, and did not drop as I used gas. Went back to top of empty mark with ignition off. Bought a new sending unit. Same thing. New complete wiring harness installed 6 months ago. Went to look work on it today. Tank is about 3 gallons short of full. With engine running, needle is past full mark. Disconnected sending wire at tank unit. Turned ignition key on and with sending wire disconnected, needle went from empty position to quarter tank. Turned key to accessories position - same thing happens. What is going on?

Suspect that the wire that goes from the gauge to the sending unit in the tank is shorted to the vehicle ground. You can test for this by disconnecting the wire from the gauge and checking the resistance between the wire and vehicle ground. It should show an open circuit, infinite resistance. If not, the wire is shorted to ground causing the gauge to read full. If you don't want to determine where the wire is shorted out, you can run another wire from the gauge directly to the fuel tank sender unit and route it along the fuel line or other easy to reach path to the tank.

Bill, the sending unit screw may be grounding out on the access cover in the trunk. Put several layers of electrical tape on the bottom side of the access cover, to insulate the screw from the cover. Tom
