  h*llo,having trouble getting fuel gauge to work. have 6 volts in and out of gauge to sending unit ground on unit is good. with key off i ran wires from a 6volt lattern battery hooked them on the sending unit wire and ground and the gauge works whats wrong? why wont the 6volts from the car operate the gauge any ideas thanks john goetz

  If the gas gauge needle moves to full when the wire from the sender is grounded, the gauge is working. If not the wire to the gauge may be open (broken). You can string a wire from the gauge back to the sender to see if that will remedy the problem. If not, use the wire to check the ground from the battery ground cable at the firewall to the mounting flange of the sender. If you still don't find the trouble, remove the sender from the tank and move the float. You didn't say whether you have an original King-Seely sender or a repro. They operate by different principles. The K-S unit has a bimetal strip that pulses the feed to the gauge, while the repro has a variable resistor that wipes a winding to furnish voltage to the gauge. The gauges in old Fords are very tough, and unless they have been furnished with more than 6 volts, they are seldom at fault.
