Topic: windsheild Glass

I have installed a new windsheild weatherstrip ordered from Dennis Carpenter,we used the old glass and when fitting glass into weatherstrip on bench glass seemed fairly loose, and after installed still seems a little loose, Im assumming they make only one w/w weatherstrip for the 46_48 car, either glass seems to short or weatherstrip to big. Any ideas????

If the gasket was too big, it would be difficult to install and would not lay flat in the opening at the corners. If the glass was too small, it would be loose in the opening.

There are two gaskets for '42-'48, one for closed cars, the other for open, and they do not interchange. Last time I ordered one from Carpenter, they sent me the closed car version, 21A-7003110-A instead of the "B" version for my convertible. I called them, and they insisted that "one size fits all", so I returned it and ordered the correct seal from another supplier. Check to be sure you used the correct seal.

Thanks Boys...Im pretty sure the gasket is right. I do have the one with the groove for the s/s trim , but glass is loose in gasket. we used glass that came out of the car,my glass guy said he could take pattern of w/w and cut glass that way or should I get glass from Macs auto that has glass cut with a orginal pattern???

When replacing glass, it is always necessary to check both the thickness and the shape. I'd order replacements from a specialist, such as Sanders. We don't buy anything from Mac's.

I'm not trying to knock Carpenter but I've several posts on other sites about his windshield rubber not being right. I'd send it back and try a different supplier.

Most modern auto glass places have little or no experience with laminated safety glass, including dressing the edges. Always check glass thickness with a digital caliper gauge. Just a few thousandths will make a big difference in whether the glass fits or not.

Not the same car but the same situation as I was having problems installing Dennis Carpenter rubber to hold quarter and rear glass on my 37 coupe three years ago. The Sanders glass would be loose in rubber and when I tried rubber in the four holes it was too big, sent back and ordered Drakes and it fit the glass good and the body. I went with Carpenter because years ago when I did a 53 F-100 I used all Carpenters and it fit great, but not this time on this project.
