Topic: master cylinder rebuild

I rebuilt the master cylinder for my 48 coupe, honed the cylinder until smooth, installed kit(lubed with brake fluid), added fluid in reservoir, mounted to bench vise and waited for leaks, after a bit of time the fluid started leaking from the front only, what did I do wrong?

If the cylinder has been rebuilt before (maybe more than once) and the person that did it honed it smooth also the bore may be oversize for the kit. If you have a caliper you can measure the bore, good luck.

Are you sure the rubber cup has the lip which seals it facing the fluid? A cylinder would have to be enlarged more than honing could ever do to make the bore so big that it won't let the rubber seal it. Just look at the size of the lip on the rubber cup seal. It woul;d have to fit awfully loosely to leak. Honing 4-5 times over the years would only remove about -maybe! and that's a big MAYBE- two thousandths!, and two thousandths would not effect it at all. I worked as a mechanic and did many, many brake jobs and honed a lot, and they always sealed. Remember- that's HARDENED steel! The only ones that won't seal are thos that are pitted too bad!!
