Topic: Smooth Stromberg 97

I finished rebuilding one of the Stromberg 97's that I had been running on my '35 Cabriolet. I made a couple comments about it a month ago on anther thread.

It is now back on the car and I have some miles on it. Easy start and quick on the acceleration. I had forgotten how smooth that carburetor could run. Should have done it a long time ago.

It had a #63 Power Valve and a pair of .045 jets in it. I put a new #65 Power Valve and new .045 jets. Could have used the old jets I guess. Also put in a new pump inlet check valve with the rest of a rebuild kit.

The hardest time I had was removing the old #63 power valve and clearing a blockage of one of the pump discharge nozzles. The rest was just getting that carburetor clean. I do recommend getting a Stromberg jet wrench.

A very helpful article on the Detroit-Lubricator and the Stromberg 97 is at the following link:

Actually, the 97 is a fairly simple unit and I'm going to go ahead and rebuild the other 97 as a spare. I had it on the car while I was working on the first one. It surely has a bad piston and trash in it so I will go ahead and fix it now while the bench is set up and I can remember how it's done. Getting old over here!

Thanks for the comments on a previous thread a month ago. The power valve wasn't closing and allowed too much fuel at idle.
