I used to adjust the gap based upon what I was "going to do". A little wider gap will generally give a better idle, and closing the gap down a "tad" will allow for higher speed operation and more complete combustion. Our old Ford ignitions do have "their limits", and as engine loads increase, combustion pressures do as well. It get's harder to fire a plug across a larger gap under load than it is to fire a plug under low-load conditions. I'm not talking about a "big difference", just the difference between .022" and .028", with an upper limit of about .030 with a stock Ford ignition.

Believe Bubba recommends 0.025 max with electronic ignitions.
