Topic: 6 volt battery voltage goes to zero when connected

I'm working on a '32 1/2 ton panel truck with a 21 stud V8 in it and when I connect the new battery the voltage drops to zero as if neutralized. I can actually witness the voltage going from 6.5 to 0 by having my volt meter connected as I make the final battery connection. When I remove a battery cable, the battery rebounds to its normal voltage very slowly. This is a standard 6 volt positive ground system with no modifications. Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Put the battery on a charger and see if you can get a full charge, then take it to an auto parts store and have it tested. They usually do it for free of charge. You can also put your meter across the cars battery terminals (battery disconnected) as an ohmmeter and look for a short circuit (0 or near Zero Ohms). If there is a short find it and correct before reconnecting the battery.

Disconnect the battery negative cable and connect the positive cable to ground. Connect a test light between the negative battery terminal and the negative battery cable by attaching the clamp to the cable and touching the pointed probe to the post. If the light comes on, you have a short circuit somewhere.

Start disconnecting wires until the light does not come on. Start with disconnecting the cable to the starter motor and then disconnect the wires at the ammeter, one at a time.

Here is a link to the wiring diagram for your truck.
