What would I gain if I decided to change my gas line from 1/4 inch to 5/16 .Also would their be an adapter that I could screw in to my fuel tank to accept the new line???

You would not gain anything. The fuel tank fitting would still be the same size and the fuel pump and carburetor fittings would still be the same size. The standard 1/4 inch line is adequate for all the early Fords.
Why do you need to replace?

Quarter inch is sufficient if it isn't internally rusted or dirt clogged. For many years, it was unusual to find a bad fuel line that wasn't obviously physically damaged. Now, it has become more common, probably from the moisture in the "new" gas. The line on my '47 was so rusty that I couldn't even work a wire thru it after straightening it out!
