Topic: Car stopped running - Need Help

Driving the car last night, pulled into the driveway and the engine stopped running. Engine turns over, but it acts like it has no spark. Car has been running well and starting fine.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

You should give us the year of the car as it makes some difference in trouble shooting.

1)Operate the accelerator linkage while looking down the throat of the carburetor. You should see 2 streams of gas. This will tell you that you have gas to the engine. If not check for gas in the tank, that the flex line is good, that the line from the tank is clear.
2) Use insulated pliers to hold a plug wire near a head nut while the starter is turning over the engine with the ignition on. You should see a spark about 1/4" to 1/2" long. If you have a spark, check the plugs.
2a) If you don't have a spark, check the voltage to the input of the coil (it should be near battery voltage), remove the condenser and check it with an ohmmeter (it should read open)

One quick diagnostic step you can take to determine whether the problem is fuel or ignition related is to spray some starting fluid into the air intake. After doing this, attempt to start the engine. If the engine doesn't even try to fire, you know you have no spark.

Sorry about your issues, but I'm sure they will eventually be solved with the knowledge available on this site. I carry an ignition tester in my tool box just for situations like this. It's basically a spark plug with an alligator clip that plugs into the end of a plug wire and grounds to the block. It's available from Matco Tool part no. KD2757.
