Topic: 59 blocks

I have a 59 series block that apparently was a replacement for a 221 cubic inch engine. I do know that regular 221 engines could be bored from 3 1/16 out to 239 3 3/16 safely. Question is: is this 59 series block extra thick walled? In other words can it be safely bored even more?

The maximum overbore recommended by Ford is 0.060. That would bring the bore to approximately 3 5/16.

I need a little clarification. Are you saying that a 221 cubic inch block (59 series) can be bored that far, to 3 5/16? In other words 060 oversize for a 3 1/16 block or could that block be bored to 3 3/16 plus 060 oversize? I actually only want to go to 3 3/16 bore (stock 239 bore) but I want to have plenty of meat left for cooling/wall flex etc. This 59 block was factory bored to only 3 1/16. I have other 239 blocks I could use, but this one is pretty nice and the one I would like to use.

Sorry, I also should have added a Thankyou for your first reply.

You should be able to safely bore the block .060 oversize. Your machine shop should check the wall thickness before they bore it. Every block is different.

The 59A block was designed to be bored at 3 3/16. I don't know if Ford selected blocks to be bored to the 3 1/16" bore because of cylinder wall thickness, but I doubt that they had the technology or time in the 1940's to do this.
