Topic: 39 coupe quarter window sealant

The car is down to metal with epoxy primer and just starting to paint. Last issue is some wierd sealant at the quarter windows. Glass is out, rubber is out, but there is a VERY hard black sealant on both window openings...only at the bottoms and about half way up the rear edge. Is this factory? I don't think the glass and rubber have ever been disturbed. It's almost like bakelite and very tough. I left it in when I shot the epoxy, but need to make a decision before top coat. Any ideas? I may try heating it with a blow dryer to see if it softens...Thanks! PS. decided on Glenmist Green from '52. We used to call it Ford Green and I still see it on pickups from time to time...

I suspect someone, sometime, tried to seal a leak. It is always hard to know what it is, from "real" weatherstrip cement to epoxy. Scr*ping almost always damages the surrounding surface. 3M makes an adhesive and weatherstrip remover that is available at good parts places or body shop suppliers. If it is, in fact, epoxy, it will likely have to be ground or sanded away, as most solvents won't touch it.

Scr*pe the stuff out, clean up good and get the quarter window seating channel to replace it. The channel is a simple "U" and is sold by length. Put the ends at the top.
